Nathan Alva Howes , circus director in United States Howes was born * 1796-04-22 dead 1878-06-28 , son of other Daniel Howes and other Ruhamah Reed . Nathan Alva Howes, born in Southeast, New York in 1796, dead 1878, was son to Daniel Howes (descendant of John de Huse in UK) and Ruhamah Reed, and his brother was Seth B. Howes. Nathan Howes began his circus career at 15 becoming an assistant to a tight rope walker, and funded Nathan Howes & Co.s Circus in 1826 with Aaron Turner and Sylvester Reynolds, funded 1832 Nathan Howes & Co.'s Circus, with Richard Sands American Circus, Nathan A. Howes winter circus, He also rented out 2 elephants to Hopkins and Co. Nathan Alva Howes was married to Clarissa Crosby Howes. Elbert and Egbert Howes, twin sons of Nathan and Clarissa born Feb. 25, 1831, carried on the circus tradition with the Howes Great London Circus, touring New England, New York, New Jersey, and Ontario. Egbert Howes was also part owner in Dan Castello Circus.
Seth B. Howes seems to hove gone into semi-retirement after he sold his Great European to the Flatfoots and left the active management of his later circuses to his twin nephews, Elbert Howes and Egbert Howes. These nephews were two of the thirteen children of Nathan A. Howes, older brother of Seth and also an early circus manager. Seth B., himself, lived until 1901 and died a wealthy man. The Clipper for February 12, 1870, tells us that Egbert Howes, under an engagement to Seth B., had sailed recently for England to start another circus there under the Howes & Cushing title as the show was known in 1857-63. Later issues of the Clipper substantiate that they opened in Liverpool on the 19th of March and were out at least through September.
