Among the earliest records of a captive elephant in France is 1. an African elephant, which was a gift from Egypt to King Louis IX of France. Egypt proposed an alliance with Louis against Syria and gave him an elephant to this end in 1252–1253, which he himself after keeping it in Paris, gifted to king Henry III of England in 1255.
