The first elephant arriving in Germany was Charlemagnes elephant Abul-Abbas, arriving in Aachen in 802. The second elephant in Germany is refered to as The Cremona elephant arriving in 1229.

In 1995 Germany had elephants on more circuses than in Zoos. Since then many circuses lost their elephants.

During 1650, 1668 and 1692, elephants were exhibited on the annual Leipziger Messe, including a private elephant bought from William I of Württemberg in Germany had bought.
